The Love of Family, part two

In: Family, Me

Tomorrow morning, I head to Dallas to pick up my family from the airport and bring them home. To say I’m looking forward to this is obvious, and an understatement. I’ve missed them terribly. Jana has called me just about every day and I’ve gotten to talk to my little girls a few times as [...]

The Love of Family

In: Family, Me

I came back from dropping my wife and two daughters at DFW airport this morning so that they can spend some time with Jana’s family in Minnesota. While I was happy that we could make this happen, it was a sad moment for me. While I am always sad to be away from my wife [...]

The Anatomy of a Media Fast

In: Family, Me, Media

On Sunday I started a two-week media fast. This was a concept that God first introduced me to when I was a youth pastor. I had taken the youth to a retreat and in the retreat we were all challenged to examine our lives and see what changes might need to be made. God made [...]

I turn 41 in a few days and the process of self-reflection always gets amplified during this time of the year for me. This year it seems to have gone into overdrive due to the following facts:

I’ve come to an epiphany regarding my unwillingness to put forth effort because I tend to believe that very [...]

Okay - I’ve finally transcribed all the notes from all the sessions into the blog - reading back over them, there is much to expand upon (and some things just flat out won’t make sense until I do). This was easily one of the most mind-expanding and convicting events I’ve taken part in. God used [...]

Recovering gracefully

In: Family, Worship

First day back at work after being out sick on Thursday and Friday and I’m bone-tired. After the convention on Saturday, I slept for four hours and then due to all that sleep was up until 2:30am. Woke up Sunday a bit later than I wanted and forced myself to remain awake so that I [...]

Bronchiosauraus

In: Family, Me

Ugh… over a week of bronchitis and starting Friday I caught a cold. I’ve been sleeping and sleeping and sleeping. I have a headache that feels like a vise is gripping my skull and refusing to relent. Inhalers, cold medicine, and pain relievers… oh my.
This on top of my entire family still recovering from their [...]

Emotions and providence

In: Family, Me

Let me apologize in advance for the length of this post, but it’s a story that needs some detail and the things God showed me through this story are difficult to shorten.
Something unusual and nerve-racking happened to me today. I was downstairs reading an article on Challies.com (a site I hadn’t visited in ages) just [...]

A fictional tale…

In: Family, Friends, Me

The scene: Me and Zoë seated right in front of Derek Webb at Common Grounds in Waco. There was standing room only and Téya was having difficulty with all the clapping, so Jana took her to the back of the coffee shop while we stayed in our choice seats to watch Derek. This scene is [...]

Earth Day Weekend

In: Eco-friendly, Family, Issues

Today, the 21st (the beginning of the Earth Day festivities in Austin), we went to the Austin Farmer’s Market at Republic Square downtown. We had been wanting to take the bus as a family into downtown and get some exercise plus get the chance to meet people and see the city from a different perspective. [...]

Hopefully, you see in these writings a man who is staying The Course and pursuing The Path amidst the pitfalls and selfish ways of being a son of Adam. I pray earnestly that my writing would encourage some of you by showing you that this journey - though arduous and sometimes tragic - is a journey of great satisfaction. A satisfaction greater than our greatest imaginings. The trials and refining fire of tribulation are to be recognized as a small shadow of the suffering of our Savior so that we can rejoice, as Peter and the disciples did, to be counted worthy to suffer for the sake of the Name.
