Um... dunno Category

In the American Christian culture, we have been seduced by our belief in the fundamental right for us to keep whatever we want private from whomever we want. Now, before the conspiracy theorists run off half-cocked and start screaming about “Big Brother” and how awful it would be if we didn’t have privacy laws… stop [...]

There are many schools of thought regarding children within a worship service. Is it appropriate? What are they really getting out of the service? A very good friend asked me my thoughts on this a while back. Off and on, our youngest daughter struggles during the worship time and it brought these thoughts back to [...]

As I’ve said, I’m involved in a church plant… now, I’m not the lead planter. No, no, no - I’m crazy… just not that crazy. I’m kinda like an associate planter (not a real position). In more traditional terms, I would be called a co-planter… yeah, that is as meaningless as the term I came [...]

Finished the Half-Life Orange Box

In: Um... dunno

So - I got all the way through the Orange Box (cheated like crazy… I have no time, remember? and that List of Great Things I Must Accomplish ain’t getting any shorter). It’s been at least 2 years since I’ve played a video game and I was amazed at the gameplay (I know - this [...]

Believing in mission

In: Um... dunno

In my previous post, I attempt to satire the extremes of the Missional Movement (as I like to call it). Don’t get me wrong, there is much to rejoice about when it comes to this movement. God has obviously stirred up a whole generation of PoMo’s (Post Modernists) to embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ [...]

The cycles of life

In: Um... dunno

I blog, then I don’t, then I blog, then I don’t… I have no explanation for this other than: at times, I have much I wish to write about - at other times, I don’t. It’s not that there isn’t anything interesting going on… I just don’t feel like writing about it. But, it appears [...]

I am Iron Man

In: Um... dunno

Just got back from seeing Iron Man with my wife (thanks honey!) at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar. We got there about 10 to 7 for the 7:10 show and it was sold out, so we bought tickets for the 8:00 show and noticed that the line had already formed. So we’re standing in [...]

Be careful what you wish for…

In: Um... dunno

There’s an old saying in evangelical circles that has often been quoted to me:
Never ask God to give you more patience because He’ll just test your patience to the breaking point and you’ll end up more frustrated than ever.
Have you heard that one?
The question is, if God has revealed that you lack patience, to whom [...]

A pursuit that leads to despair

In: Um... dunno

I was introduced to a new blog today by Mike Metzger (thanks to JollyBlogger). What a find this blog is… in March, Mike blogged about Good Friday in a fantastic post called, “Don’t Worry, Be Sad.” He quotes Peggy Noonan with a remarkable quote:
“I think we have lost the old knowledge that happiness is overrated. [...]

Over on the Challies blog, he’s posted a comment regarding Rapture Ready, a book written by “a secular liberal” who “immerses himself in Christian pop culture and uses this book to write about his experiences.” This post sparked in me a series of questions that I’ve been asking myself regarding parenting - I commented on [...]

Hopefully, you see in these writings a man who is staying The Course and pursuing The Path amidst the pitfalls and selfish ways of being a son of Adam. I pray earnestly that my writing would encourage some of you by showing you that this journey - though arduous and sometimes tragic - is a journey of great satisfaction. A satisfaction greater than our greatest imaginings. The trials and refining fire of tribulation are to be recognized as a small shadow of the suffering of our Savior so that we can rejoice, as Peter and the disciples did, to be counted worthy to suffer for the sake of the Name.
